MuslimApologies… For What!
Finding themselves in the spotlight for the offenses of a violent minority they have nothing to do with, Muslims around the world have turned to humor to battle rising Islamophobia spawning the hashtag #MuslimApologies.
“I'm sorry the founder of the world's oldest university was a Muslim women in 859 (Fez, Morocco): Fatima al-Fihri #MuslimApologies,” a Twitter user, Wiam, wrote.
“I'm sorry that Muslim women had rights 1400 years ago while you were still discussing if women had souls. #MuslimApologies,” another using the name Nader added.
The hashtag sprung up on the same day that President Obama said before the United Nations General Assembly that "it is time for the world – especially Muslim communities – to explicitly, forcefully, and consistently reject the ideology of al Qaeda and ISIL," the Washington Post wrote.
Obama specifically mentioned the #NotInMyName campaign, launched by the London-based Active Change Foundation to condemn the Islamic State by saying their actions don't represent British Muslims.
A number of Muslim leaders around the world have overtly condemned the Islamic State, issuing strong-worded statements to deny any relation between Islam and the militant group.
Affected by the assumption of collective responsibility of the Muslim majority on the actions of the minority, Muslims launched the hashtag #MuslimApologies to represent another reaction, frustration.
Many of the tweets express weariness about having to apologize for the actions of extremists who claim to represent Islam, a religion with an estimated 1.6 billion adherents worldwide.
The tweets vary about inventions birthed during the height of Islamic civilization and sorrow for general phenomena such as Vanilla Ice.
“Im sorry #Islam is demonised, despite being one of the multi-cultural religions in the #UK #MuslimApologies” MendCommunity tweeted.
“We'd also like to apologise for the amazing architecture...for instance the Taj Mahal, really sorry. #MuslimApologies,” theconsciousmuslim tweeted.
Famous figures have also participated in the hashtag, including Lauren Booth and Mehdi Hasan.
I'm sorry for the confusion london cabbies face when they expect me to have an Arab accent and I say 'alright mate?' #MuslimApologies,” Lauren Booth, Tony Blair’s sister-in-law, tweeted.
“I'm so sorry for coffee, cheques, parachutes, chemistry, inoculations, soap, shampoo, cameras, etc,” Mehdi Hasan, Huffington Post UK's political director, wrote
